Online surveys

Opinions are like assholes, every body has one, or so the saying goes. So how about making money just by sharing yours? (opinion that is!)

You may well have encountered loads of sites already that tell you how you can earn $40 – 50 per hour just by filling in surveys at home using your computer. Most of these sites will tell you that you need to register with all the survey sites that they list to ensure that you get sent as many surveys as possible to maximise your earning potential.

The truth is that the people who've set up those sites get kickbacks for referring people to the various different survey sites, so the more you sign up with, the better their return. Hence the reason why a lot of them will even offer you money (albeit not much) for going through them to sign up. As part of our investigation into this method of making money online Cash Ninja has registered with so many of them that we've lost track of the sites we have and have not registered with. The upshot of that is most days the Cash Ninja mailbox gets sent a minimum of 4 different surveys to complete on various subjects. They offer varying rewards for providing your opinion - some enter you into a prize draw, others award points that you can accumulate and exchange for various items. Others give you cold, hard, cash, which is, lets face it, what you're probably after right?

So far we haven't won any of the prize draws or accumulated enough points to trade in for more than about £5 cash so the jury is still out on this one as far as we're concerned. Be wary of sites that tell you about earning $20 per survey for completing surveys and then charge you money to sign up to something...

Be prepared to answer the surveys on the same topics over and over and over again after a while. Particular favourites Cash Ninja has encountered recently (and started to get very bored with) are insurance, beer and supermarkets!

Here are links to some, we're sure you can search and find plenty more out there and more will be added as it becomes clearer which ones are good and worth bothering with and which are not worth the time and effort.

Valued Opinions

Both of these sites are now sending Cash Ninja 2-3 surveys a day, Ciao offering cash (albeit a small amount) for completion of each survey and Lightspeed offering points that you can exchange for various things.

As with the competitions sites Cash Ninja suggests setting up a new email address before embarking on your online survey adventure, so you don't have to wade through 25 emails about rubbish to get to the ones from your friends. Alternatively, don't and you can get lots of emails and feel more popular. Cash Ninja has now got to the point where we haven't had time to complete many surveys recently and are now being overwhelmed by mounting numbers of them arriving in our inbox everyday!!!

Having investigated this for about 6 months, we have come to the conclusion that getting paid to watch paint dry would be a more interesting and rewarding way of earning a living. Yes, you can make money from filling in online surveys (whether you can earn a living from it without getting other people to sign up is debatable) but the real question is are you really that bored that you would want to? A great deal of the surveys are about the same subjects and a lot want more involved answers than just ticking boxes. Shockingly they actually want you to think about what the subject of the survey is! Cash Ninja doesn't have time for such nonsense!

Postal surveys

The Royal Mail are constantly being surveyed to see how well the post is handled in the UK. You can take part in these surveys. All you need to do is send and receive letters and record the details on a website. For your time you get rewarded with stamps and occasionally vouchers. If you are someone who sends a lot of letters then the stamps can come in handy (here at Cash Ninja we have a stockpile of about 70 1st class stamps from doing this!) and the vouchers can be used in numerous high street stores.
